Sony Rolls Out PS3 3.30 Firmware

Sony is keeping to its promise of adding continual improvements to its PlayStation 3 console. Sony's last update for the PS3 nixed the "Install Other OS" feature from "fat" PS3 -- the move resulted in one UK PS3 owner getting a refund of $129 from Amazon.

The latest firmware update doesn't bring back the removed features, but it does add support for 3D stereoscopic gaming. In addition, it adds a few improvements to the PS3's Trophies:

Trophy enhancements –- Now you can more easily sort trophies in the [Trophy Collection] and [Comparing Trophy] sections. Sorting can be done with [Trophy Collection] in the [Game Category] and also when comparing trophies with your friends in the [Friend Category]

o Trophy Folder (Title List) can be sorted by game name/ by title according to the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)
o Add-on list (Group list) can be sorted by original/the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)
o Trophy list can be sorted by original/trophy name/grade/date of obtaining the trophy (ascending/descending)

You can upgrade to the latest PS3 firmware using the System Update feature within the XMB.

PlayStation 3 Hacked - free ps3 games - soon to be released

George Hotz, the 20 year old guy, best known for cracking Apple’s iPhone says he’s done it again, this time with Sony’s PlayStation 3.

In a his blog post George Hotz said that after a five-week effort, he’d finally managed to run his own software on the PlayStation 3, which typically only plays digitally signed software that is approved by Sony.

I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1. I’ve also dumped the NAND without removing it or a modchip.”

He pulled off the feat using “very simple hardware, cleverly applied, and some not so simple software,” he added.

Hotz received widespread media attention in 2007 when he developed a technique that allowed the iPhone to run on any wireless network. In the U.S., iPhones are sold exclusively for use with AT&T’s network.

Hotz’s new technique could allow PlayStation 3 users to run new, unauthorized software on their systems. Such software could include the Linux operating system or older PlayStation 2 games, which don’t work on the PlayStation 3. But the hack could also give gamers a way to run pirated software on their systems too.

PlayStation fans will have to wait some time before they get to see Hotz’s code, however. In his blog post, he said he isn’t revealing how he pulled off his trick just yet, in part because he’s worried that Sony may find a way to disable his technique.

That’s what Apple tried to do with the Jailbreak hack. The company has repeatedly disabled the Jailbreak code in software updates to its devices, but hackers have responded each time with new techniques to keep the phones unlocked.

Hotz did say that he was hoping to find and publish the device’s decryption keys, which could help others develop and run unauthorized software for the machines.

New PS3 Streaming Service Offered By Netflix

Netflix disc must remain in PS3 to access Netflix service

Yesterday Netflix announced that its streaming service would be available for the PS3. Netflix is offering a reservation program that will send the required disc to PS3 users when the software is available next month. Joystiq went directly to Netflix for more details on the service.

Joystiq reports that the special disc does in fact have to remain in the PS3 for the streaming service to work. The reason is that Netflix doesn't have a XMB solution in place at the moment and won't have one until sometime in 2010.

Netflix reports that the application was developed with help from the Sony team. The reason Netflix went with a disc based solution rather than waiting for integrated capability was the issue of timing. Netflix told Joystiq, "Netflix members and PS3 owners have really wanted a way to instantly watch movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system. The instant streaming disc represented the fastest and easiest way to let them do this."

Netflix reports that late next year next year, “We expect to have an embedded solution available for PS3s via a system software update slated for release through the PlayStation Network."

With the exclusive claims that Microsoft was making many are wondering if the disc-based solution was a way to get around the "exclusive streaming" claims Microsoft touted. Netflix says that the agreement with Sony does not conflict with its agreements with Microsoft. That "exclusive streaming" claim is likely the reason PS3 owners won’t see an embedded solution from Netflix until late in 2010.

Sony Giving Away 10000 Free PS3s in Australia

SYDNEY, NSW: Sony Australia has this morning announced an extension of its twice-successful free-PS3 promotion, with the company releasing a further 10,000 free PlayStation 3s with the purchase of selected Bravia LCD TVs.

Since first launching this promotion in July 2008, Sony has reported strong sales of its Bravia models, and a strong connection with consumers looking to acquire a TV and a home entertainment solution at the same time.

As part of this promotion, which runs concurrently with Sony’s 3-year warranty offer, Sony deputy general manager of consumer products marketing, Toby Barbour, is promising consumers they will receive their PS3 before Christmas, as long as the purchase is validated before 1 December 2009.

“It can be hard to choose the perfect gift at Christmas time, particularly something that the whole family will enjoy. While high definition TVs are a significant purchase at any time of year, they are expected to be the Christmas present of choice for many households this year; with a combination of appealing prices, latest technologies, as well as fantastic bonus offers all available. People are looking for value for money, quality purchases in light of a year of tough financial circumstances,” Barbour said.

Sony is also giving away Blu-ray movies and games at the moment. Interest parties are directed to follow Sony on Twitter or sign up to Sony Australia’s Facebook page.
